Build a Workout: Step-by-step

Build a Workout: Step-by-step

The guided way to create a workout — answer a few questions and the app builds it for you.

Step-by-step is one of the four ways to build a workout when adding activities to a base program. Rather than building from a blank canvas, you answer a short series of questions — experience level, goal, structure, length and focus — and the app builds a workout to match, ready for you to create.

Getting here: the process is the same as the Manual method up to the point where you choose a build method. In your base program, go to Activities, press Adjust, tap the + icon, then select Step-by-step. (See Create a Base Program for the full path.)

Answer the questions

  1. Choose the client's experience level:

  • Beginner — new to training or returning after a break

  • Intermediate — comfortable with the basics and ready for progress

  • Expert — experienced lifter looking for a serious challenge

  1. Choose the goal:

  • Get stronger — focused on lifting heavier and building raw strength

  • Build muscle — designed to maximise growth and size

  • Improve body composition — a balance of building muscle and reducing fat

  • Lose weight — higher intensity work to burn calories and stay active

  1. Choose the workout structure — select what to include: Warm up, Cool down, Failure sets and Drop sets.

  2. Choose how many supersets and circuits to include: None, Some or Lots.

  3. Set the workout length in minutes: 20, 30, 45, 60 or 90.

  1. Optionally exclude exercises you don't want the app to use — search the full exercise library and remove any you'd like to leave out.

  2. Choose the body-part focus: Full body, Upper body, Lower body, Push, Pull, Core or Legs.

Review and create

  1. On the Summary page, check the workout the app has put together — it pulls all your choices into a short summary so you can confirm everything's correct.

  1. Press Create. You'll be taken back to the base program menu with the workout added. From here, carry on setting up Fuel and Journal entries as covered in Create a Base Program.
